Hear Ye! An Advent Revelation

by David Lussier

Many people see God as distant and uninterested in our lives. Some believe He is too busy to be bothered. Others of us are so afraid of Him we dare not draw near. Whatever the reason, many people believe God is in heaven and we are on earth, and never the two shall meet. Even those of us who would say we have a relationship with God sometimes sense something has come between us. The reasons for this sense of separation can be many yet, the result is still the same—God seems distant. Enter Immanuel. He came to live and suffer and die with us so that we could live with Him forever. No one forced Him to do this; He did it because He wanted to. He did it because He loves us. A God who loves us that much is anything but distant.

On a winter night ago a young maiden lay down she brough into this world of ours a love of great renown She did not know what the angel meant when he said to her it will be your son through whom sin is undone little girl don't be afraid of what God asks of you through your son all folk will be like new On a winter night ago a young maiden lay down she brought into this world of ours a love of great renown

A good man and simple man is bewildered. He finds that his young betrothed is pregnant. What is he to do? What would you do? Joseph’s plan is to respond to the confusion he feels with mercy, he plans to quietly divorce her to spare her the shame and punishment of the crowd. But his plans were not God’s plans. He was open to God when the call came to do more than he thought he could. I do not think he could have heard God’s call in a dream without such openness. When he learns the truth, he extends mercy even more fully, taking her into his home, loving and caring for her and her child. He sacrifices his own desires and refuses to respond to his hurt with more hurt and the world would never be the same.

She came to me in the family way unusual for our time I wish that I had known the girl before that angel brought her to my world It seemed somehow she needed me for what I wasn't ready for I wish that I had known the girl before she brought that baby to my world It seems I wasn't ready for what my God was asking me it seems I wasn't ready for what the child would do for me She came to me in the family way unusual for our time it seems somehow God needed me for what I wasn't ready for it seems somehow they needed me that baby and the girl

As we prepare to enter into another holy season and we pull out our nativity set once again, I find myself contemplating those familiar pieces. Mary and Joseph searching for an inn. The simple shepherds going about their usual business of tending their fussy sheep. The angelic hosts bursting into the night with their song. And what do those angels proclaim? A holy baby born in the filth and smell of humble animals. A perfect God coming to live in a broken, messed-up world.

I've been working for the King of all things with so much to do I'm glad He gave me wings to fly down here to let you know He sent a little boy to do what must be done 'round here

What an incredible sight! A heavenly chorus singing a song about the birth of the King of the Universe to a handful of humble shepherds. While that contrast is striking, it fits well with everything else we know about that Bethlehem birth. Mary and Joseph did not stand out from the crowd. Bethlehem was a small and unremarkable town. Jesus’ first cradle was a feeding trough. The list goes on. But notice how the shepherds responded. After they overcame their initial shock and fear, they did what the rest of us would have done—they went to check out the manger. They had just received the most incredible news they had ever heard, and they wanted to witness what was happening. So, on they went to Bethlehem where they found everything “just as they had been told.”

Sitting here under this olive tree listening to the sound of a 100 sheep well I think there's nothing going on around here My rod and my staff and this little sheet of fleece keeping me warm in a winter night's breeze well I think there's nothing going on around here But that changed the night I saw on a hillside a 100 angels singing singing 'bout a Bethlehem birth well I think there's something going on around here I went into the city that very night found that baby wrapped up tight now I think there's something going on around here So I walked down the road singing a new melody to a 100 people about the Bethlehem baby now I sing there's something going on around here now I think there's something going on around here now I know there's something going on around here
9.
And here is the hope. God is still beside us, in us, despite our glaring imperfections. He still gives us purpose and meaning, despite the doubt, depression, and sin that weighs heavy on our shoulders. God wants to be with us, even in our messiness. He delights in our hearts, not our performances. And he can redeem every broken wing and every scar that has hurt us. That is good news of great joy. It is alive, and beautiful, and breathing. As I listen to the angels singing, I join their chorus. I’ll proclaim the good news that God shows up in dark places. I pray it will make its way to every desperate heart that needs to hear it. To every broken angel who is still looking for a reason to sing.
